Psychology

Psychological treatment can be very helpful for women suffering from anxiety related to recurrent or persistent pain associated with sexual intercourse or vaginal penetration.

As an adjunct to your Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, treatment typically begins with an open discussion with a Psychologist experienced in vulvar or genital pain. Once the problem has been diagnosed various courses of treatment could be recommended including Pelvic Health Physiotherapy or Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).

CBT combines sexual therapy with pain management strategies. A Psychologist will not only explore the possible causes of your pain, but also help you manage your disorder with the goal of having a healthy sex life and open communication with your partner.

Reasons for a consult:

  • Anxiety related to vulvar or genital pain (Dyspareunia, Vestibulodynia or Vaginismus)
  • Relationship issues as a consequence of pain
  • Low desire or sexual satisfaction
  • Fear of hurting partner
